Skansen Kronan was built in 1687. The purpose of the building was to protect Gothenburg from enemies - primarily the Danes. Together with other buildings like Elvsborgs Fästning, Marstrand Gothenburg was thought to be protected. That conception rang true. Skansen Kronan was never attacked and the magnificent canons on the inside have never been used.

Skansen Kronan has since been used as shelter for homeless citizens during the 1850s when homes were not sufficient in Gothenburg. It has also been used as a prison where the prisoners where keept in the catacombs under Skansen Kronan. On sundays the prisoners were allowed out on the yard to sell whatever handycraft they had been working on. A lot of citizens came up the hills to look and point at the prisoners....

Today Skansen Kronan is run privately and banquets such as weddings, private parties and conferences are possible.
